The oldest department in the State of Texas, the Department of Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) has been a recognized leader advancing surgical practice, education, and research. The Department is guided by a strong focus on innovation and a commitment to providing high-quality surgical care. Within its 15 divisions and sections are 73 faculty members – including recognized experts blazing new trails in excellence across surgical specialties – along with approximately 25 mid-level providers and 26 staff. Through exploration of new technologies, techniques, and clinical approaches, the Department raises the bar for outstanding patient care.
The Division Chief of Advanced GI and General Surgery is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the Division, including the quality of the Division's clinical and academic programs and oversight for eleven faculty in the division across the specialty sections of Colorectal Surgery, Hernia, Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery as well as the General Surgeons. This includes the appropriate and optimal use of human, financial, space, and other resources to successfully manage the Division's clinical, educational, and research missions. The Division Chief will foster an atmosphere conducive to faculty development, education, clinical productivity, scientific excellence, and the provision of outstanding clinical care.
The Division Chief will ensure clinical efficiency and grow the Advanced GI and General Surgery Division while implementing progressive models of care with the best outcomes and the highest-quality patient experience and identifying opportunities to develop the clinical enterprise.
The successful candidate will be an MD, DO or MD-PhD, associate professor or professor, board-certified and licensed or eligible for medical licensure in Texas. This leader will foster a culture of clinical excellence, collaboration, and interdisciplinary initiatives. The Chief will oversee the Division's performance and ensure the optimal use of resources to successfully manage the Division in support of UTMB's mission and strategic goals.
Salary will be commensurate with Academic rank, qualifications, experience, and educational background. In addition, UTMB offers a superior benefits package, an excellent retirement program, a relocation allowance, as well as many other potential incentives.
UTMB Health encompasses four campuses with a total of six hospitals, and includes an extensive network of 95 primary, specialty, and urgent care clinics in (49 locations throughout a nine-county region in Southeast Texas, including Galveston, Brazoria and Harris counties. In fiscal year 2025, UTMB Health recorded 1.6 million outpatient encounters, more than 45,000 hospital discharges, over 147,000 emergency room visits and 6,800 deliveries in its Labor and Delivery units. This comprehensive Health System provides a full range of care, from the most basic health maintenance to advanced care for complex conditions. In addition, UTMB Health operates 12 Regional Women's Services and Pediatrics clinics across the state to provide essential services to medically underserved women and is one of the largest such programs in the state with more than 210,000 visits annually.
