The Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiac Surgery at Southlake Regional Health Centre and the University of Toronto is inviting applications for a full time academic cardiac surgeon with specialized training and experience in mitral valve repair. The effective date of this appointment is as soon as possible.
The candidate must hold an MD, MBBS or equivalent, and must be able to function proficiently in English. Responsibilities include clinical, scholarly, and administrative duties, as required.
The successful candidate should be a recently qualified fellowship trained surgeon with outstanding potential, or an established surgeon with an international reputation. They should be experienced with most aspects of cardiac surgery including revascularization, valve repair and replacement, and aortic surgery. A proven track record and/or specialized training in mitral valve repair is essential. Specialized training in minimally invasive cardiac surgery, MitraClip and/or TAVI would also be an asset.
The candidate will provide effective and collaborative leadership at the hospital, provincial, national, and international level. Start-up support and mentorship will be provided for the successful candidate. Demonstrated academic excellence in basic or clinical research, surgical education, quality and safety, or other academic pursuits is required. Candidates must also be eligible for an appointment as a Surgeon-Scientist, Surgeon-Investigator, Surgeon-Teacher, or other academic stream at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor at the University of Toronto. The candidate must be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Candidates must obtain an appropriate visa, if applicable.
The Division of Cardiac Surgery is currently comprised of 4 full time cardiac surgeons sharing a volume of approximately 1,000 open cases per year that is expected to grow. We are supported by nurse practitioners and nurse first assistants, 3 cardiac operating rooms with dedicated OR staff, a 10 bed CVICU and a 4 bed step-down unit.
Southlake is a Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care designated and funded Regional Cardiac Program located 35 km north of Toronto and serving 1.5 million people and 10 hospitals in York Region and North Simcoe Muskoka. Our services are comprehensive including primary PCI, world firsts in electrophysiology techniques, minimally invasive aortic valve surgery, sutureless valves, and a rapidly expanding structural heart program including TAVR and MitraClip.
Southlake’s cardiology staff includes groups sub-specializing in interventional, electrophysiology, critical care cardiology, and advanced heart failure. We also provide surgical services for cardiologists located at partner hospitals in the region including a cath lab at Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie, Ontario.
Compensation is through fee-for service billing and on-call stipend and is expected to be approximately $500,000-$600,000 CAD per year depending on clinical workload.
