Company History

HISTORY

A history of service. A supportive community. A broad range of health care offerings. A lot of pieces come together to make Bartlett Regional Hospital what it is. We’re committed to being the best community hospital in Alaska.

Originally known as St. Ann’s Hospital, the hospital opened in 1886 and was operated by the Sisters of St. Ann until the 1960s. In 1965 the hospital operations were turned over to the City and Borough of Juneau and a new facility, named for Alaska Senator Bob Bartlett, was built at the hospital’s present location.

Bartlett Regional Hospital, the largest hospital in Southeast Alaska, is a medical hub for patients of northern southeast Alaska. Bartlett serves a 15,000 square mile region which is geographically remote, accessible only by airplane or boat. Approximately 46,000 people reside in the service area, most in communities inaccessible by road. Juneau itself, the largest city in the region and the capital of Alaska with a population of 31,000, has no road link to other communities.

Bartlett Regional Hospital is licensed as 71 bed acute care hospital including 12 psychiatric beds in the Mental Health Unit and 16 substance abuse residential treatment beds in the Rainforest Recovery Center. The hospital provides comprehensive health care services including; surgical services, critical care, obstetrics, general medical/surgical services, diagnostic imaging - including mammography, CT, MRI, ultrasound and radiology services, laboratory services, chemo/infusion therapy services, physical/occupational/speech therapy services, mental health inpatient treatment, outpatient psychiatric services, chemical dependency residential and outpatient treatment, and sleep studies.

Bartlett Regional Hospital is an enterprise fund of the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ). The land and assets of the hospital are owned CBJ. A nine member Board of Directors is appointed by the Assembly of the City and Borough of Juneau for three year terms. The Board of Directors is responsible for the economic viability and oversight of management and medical operational issues. Board meetings are open to the public and attended by a Juneau Assembly/hospital liaison.

The hospital is financially self-supporting through first party and third party user service fees. CBJ general fund and excise tax funds help support the Rainforest Recovery Center, the substance abuse residential treatment facility. Bartlett Regional Hospital completed a $67 million new construction and renovation project of the hospital (150,000 square feet) over the course of seven years. Borough voters approved a temporary sales tax to help fund of this project.

Each year the Board reviews comparative pricing data. Results show that overall Bartlett’s charges are among the lowest among hospitals of comparable size in Alaska.

The Joint Commission accredits Bartlett Regional Hospital and its services. The Laboratory is certified by the College of American Pathologists. Mammography services are certified by the American College of Radiology. Bartlett is a certified Medicare and Medicaid provider.

There is a growing trend within Alaska for patients to have their health care needs met locally instead of traveling out of state for treatment. Bartlett Regional Hospital is committed to providing patients greater opportunity to stay in the community for medical services where they can be attended by family and friends. Such attention is conducive to patient comfort and healing, increases social contacts and shortens rehabilitation time. Given this growing trend, Bartlett expects that satisfied local patients will encourage others to stay in the community for health care thereby increasing Bartlett’s viability as a regional medical hub.

Benefits

Bartlett Regional Hospital strives to remain competitive to assist in meeting our vision statement of being the best community hospital in Alaska. The hospital recognizes that our employees are our strongest resource. We recently had an outside entity conduct a comprehensive wage and benefit review. We are pleased that our wages are competitive, and we have brought up to market the few positions that were below market.

Our benefit package is strongly competitive and our generous paid leave program is one of the best in the Pacific Northwest. Bartlett Regional Hospital participates in the City and Borough of Juneau's self-insured medical program, which provides for a 3-tier choice for employees and their families. In addition, the hospital participates in the State of Alaska Public Employees Retirement Program (PERS), because we are considered a government entity with the City and Borough of Juneau.

Certain positions are eligible for the Relocation Assistance Program. This program provides out-of-state residents a relocation assistance package with a work commitment contract. For additional relocation information, please refer to the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
