Overview
MedRVA Healthcare is seeking a collaborative and operationally focused Director of Surgical Services to support perioperative operations across our ambulatory surgery centers in Richmond, VA. As an independent, not-for-profit healthcare organization, MEDRVA is committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care through our two state-of-the-art outpatient surgery centers, sixteen operating and procedure rooms, imaging services, and specialty care offerings.
Reporting to the Chief Nursing Officer, this role will partner closely with nursing leadership, physicians, and operational teams to support the day-to-day management and continued growth of surgical services. This position is designed as a key operational leadership role with mentorship and succession planning opportunities alongside the current Chief Nursing Officer.
The Director of Surgical Services will oversee perioperative operations including OR, pre-op, PACU, and scheduling functions while helping drive operational efficiency, quality outcomes, and staff engagement. Job Summary
Leadership & Operations
- Provide day-to-day operational leadership and support for surgical services, including OR, pre/post-operative care, and scheduling functions
- Partner closely with the Chief Nursing Officer and Nursing Managers to support departmental operations and strategic initiatives
- Directly supervise Nursing Managers and key operational staff while supporting a team of clinical personnel across surgical services
- Promote a culture of collaboration, accountability, communication, and continuous improvement
- Assist in establishing departmental goals, monitoring performance metrics, and supporting operational excellence initiatives
- Support staff coaching, performance evaluations, and professional development planning
Clinical & Perioperative Management - Support delivery of safe, high-quality patient care in accordance with established standards, policies, and regulatory requirements
- Collaborate with Nursing Managers to optimize staffing, case flow, and scheduling efficiency
- Assist with standardization of clinical practices across perioperative services to support consistency and quality outcomes
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives including infection prevention, patient safety, documentation compliance, and patient/physician satisfaction efforts
- Monitor compliance with OSHA, accreditation, and regulatory standards in partnership with organizational leadership
Physician & Stakeholder Collaboration - Serve as an operational liaison between surgical staff, physicians, and leadership teams
- Build collaborative physician relationships and support timely resolution of operational concerns
- Support physician engagement and service line growth initiatives
Staff Development & Education - Partner with Infection Prevention & Education Nurse Management to ensure clinical competency through oversight of orientation, training, and continuing education programs
- Support recruitment, onboarding, and retention of high-performing clinical staff
- Promote professional development and clinical excellence across the team
Financial & Resource Management
- Develop and manage departmental budgets in collaboration with executive leadership
- Monitor financial performance, identify variances, and implement cost-control strategies
- Oversee supply chain utilization, inventory management, and capital equipment planning
- Support evaluation and implementation of new technologies and equipment
Performance Improvement & Strategy Execution - Identify operational trends, inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement
- Implement process improvements to enhance throughput, patient experience, and clinical outcomes
- Support organizational initiatives and strategic priorities at the department level
Requirements
Required
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) or related field
Current, unrestricted RN license
Minimum of 5 years of experience in an ambulatory surgery or perioperative setting
Minimum of 2 years of leadership experience (Manager, Supervisor, or Director level)
Experience in both scrub and circulating roles
Strong interpersonal, operational, and team leadership skills
Preferred
Master's degree: MSN, MHA, MBA or related healthcare leadership degree
Certifications: CNOR, CSSM
Experience leading perioperative services in an ambulatory surgery center
Strong knowledge of staffing models, budgeting, and operational workflows
