Job Summary The PA CV/CT Surgery is a licensed, certified, non-physician healthcare provider. They render direct patient care and have prescriptive authority. They are credentialed, privileged, and billed as an independent provider by Medicare and Medicaid. The Advanced Practice Provider provides medical care based on the supervising physician's scope of practice. Surgical providers care for both adult and pediatric patients and specialize in Cardio Thoracic/Vascular. Essential Functions of the Role * Assesses patients' physical and mental condition by performing detailed exams and obtaining medical histories. Monitors patients' health and develops strategies to avoid hospitalization or shorten stays. * Orders, collects, interprets, and evaluates laboratory and other diagnostic tests to assess patient problems and health care needs. * Prescribes, recommends, or uses medical drug therapies or related treatments. Performs procedures within their practice scope, training, and policies. Focuses on efficacy, safety, and cost. Recommends interventions to change behavior linked to health risks. * Formulates and implements comprehensive patient treatment plans based on assessments, evidence-based medicine, and standards of care. Collaborates with physicians and team members when appropriate. Evaluates patient's response to care and its effectiveness. * Counsels patients and families about medical procedures, illness management, medication, nutrition, and health promotion. Counsels patients on drug regimens and possible side effects or interactions with supplements, over-the-counter medications, and herbal remedies. * Maintains appropriate records detailing the patient's treatment plans and outcomes. Initiates timely consultation and referral when the problem exceeds scope of practice or expertise. * Provide consultation level services for conditions/problems related to the Provider's specialty, scope, level of experience, and training. * First assist or second assist in the operating room or procedural setting who has completed all required training with the necessary aptitude. * Performs follow-up with patients both pre- and post-operatively. May also round on patients in the hospital or see patients in the Emergency Department. * Perform invasive or advanced procedures like endoscopic vein harvest for Cardiac and Thoracic surgery. Follow the scope of practice and provider's knowledge as delegated by the supervising Physician. * Manage patients in a healthcare setting(s) other than primary clinic setting (i.e., Inpatient, emergency services, surgical, procedural, etc.). Key Success Factors * Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program. * Know the information and techniques to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures. * Knowledge of practices, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions. * Verbal and written communication skills. * Interpersonal skills. * Critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills. * Skill in the use of computers and related software applications. * Ability to develop and implement comprehensive outcomes-based patient treatment plans. * Ability to counsel patients concerning medical and psychological/psychiatric conditions, treatment plans, and behavior modification. * Ability to interpret and evaluate laboratory and other diagnostic tests.
