Preliminary PGY-1 Resident – General Surgery
The General Surgery Residency Program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences will have two Preliminary PGY-1 positions available beginning July 01, 2026. This is a 12 month training position.
The Preliminary PGY-1 General Surgery Resident participates in the care of surgical patients under the supervision of senior residents and attending surgeons. Our interns participate in 1 month rotations on various core general surgical specialty teams, which may include a combination of the following options: Emergency General Surgery, Trauma Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, General Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Transplant Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Surgical Critical Care, Nights, Surgical Oncology.
Our preliminary interns may request a 1 month elective rotation to gain additional knowledge and experience in a field related to their career interests, outside the standard core general surgery rotations (examples include but are not limited to anesthesia, ENT, orthopedics, medical oncology, IR etc.).
Interns may rotate at some of our participating sites, including the VA and the Children's Hospital, both within a mile of the main hospital.
All our general surgery interns participate in an onboarding program "Intern Bootcamp" that includes didactics, simulations and hand-on labs, for 2 hours weekly during the first 3 months of internship.
